Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study In Depression

Are you currently experiencing depression?

The Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory of Dr. Chrysikou (Department of Psychology, University of Kansas) is currently recruiting participants (ages 18-34, right-handed, native English speakers only) for a research study involving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a technique that takes pictures of your brain, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) a technique that applies small electric currents to the scalp through electrodes. Small electrodes may also be placed on your fingers to record your skin responses. The study goal is to increase understanding of the effect of tDCS on brain activity and emotional responses during mental tasks in people with depression.

Your participation in the study will involve evaluation of your abilities to regulate emotions and answer simple questions about everyday items with paper-and-pencil and computerized tests. If you are eligible and decide to participate in this study, we will ask you to take some tests that require you to answer questions, follow verbal instructions, press buttons, and the like. Your participation will last a total of 4 hours. You will have an initial appointment lasting approximately one 1 hour at KU-Lawrence or Hoglund Brain Imaging Center (HBIC) at KUMC, whichever is most convenient for you, and a second appointment lasting approximately 3 hours at HBIC. Your participation will involve a psychological interview and a questionnaire at KU-Lawrence or HBIC, followed by one tDCS with fMRI scanning session, questionnaires and cognitive testing at HBIC. Your participation is completely voluntary. You will receive $100 for your time. Note that the tDCS device is an investigational device limited by Federal (or United States) law to investigational use; it is not FDA-approved for clinical purposes. If you are interested, please email the Chrysikou lab at chrysikoulab@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.
